Abstract: This interdisciplinary study highlights how literature - as
a societal mirror- expresses some societal phenomena among which
is social mobility that is tackled in “Folded Beijing” by Hao
Jingfang, the 2016 “Hugo” Award winner, to be the first Asian
female writer to receive this award, internationally known as the
Science Fiction Nobel. Through combining fiction with reality, the
writer presented social mobility as a significant social phenomenon.
In her study, the researcher used the descriptive approach of content
analysis, and concluded that the downward social mobility is highly
unlikely among the affluent upper class which enjoys the best
educational level and highest technology. While the incidence of
upward mobility is more likely to occur in the middle class as a
result of a number of incentives, when compared to the lower class
which struggles for the basic daily needs, and doesn’t have the
luxury of time to contemplate future aspirations.
